Twins’ Tragic Death Leads to Child Abuse Charges for Houston Couple

Houston, Texas – A couple in Houston has been charged in connection to the tragic deaths of twin infants that occurred in October 2023, court documents reveal. Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, are facing charges of two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury.

The Houston Police Department received a call from a home in the 2100 block of Linden Creek Lane, where two infants, later identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, were found unresponsive. The father, Vega, discovered the infants in their crib not breathing, leading to an unsuccessful attempt at CPR.

According to investigations, the infants, born prematurely, were said to be “fussy” the night before their passing. Vega placed them in a bassinet for sleep while Calderon, the mother, saw them the following day but did not disturb them as she was on her way to work. Tragically, the twins did not survive.

Autopsy results revealed that the infants died from multiple injuries caused by a blunt object. Additionally, it was discovered that the twins had not received medical check-ups after being discharged from the hospital. Calderon and Vega were both taken into custody without incident.

Family members noted concerns of abuse within the relationship, with Vega previously being arrested for restraining Calderon. Despite conflicting accounts from family members, police found evidence of malnourishment and older injuries present on the infants, ultimately leading to the arrest of the couple.

As the investigation unfolds, more details surrounding the tragic incident are expected to come to light, shedding further insight into the circumstances that led to the untimely deaths of the twin infants.
