Houston Parents Charged in Twin Infants’ Death Seek Bond Reductions

Houston, Texas – A couple charged in connection to the tragic death of their twin infants is requesting a lower bond, as stated in court documents on Monday. Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, face two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury in relation to the passing of their 5-week-old twins in October 2023.

During their court appearance on Monday, the couple’s attorneys advocated for bond reductions. Currently, both Calderon and Vega are being held on a $750,000 bond for each case. Calderon’s bond reduction hearing is set for Friday, while Vega’s hearing is scheduled for late May.

The investigation into the twins’ deaths began when Houston Police Department patrol officers responded to a home on Linden Creek Lane, where the infants, identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, were found unresponsive. The children’s father, Vega, discovered them in their crib, not breathing. Despite efforts to perform CPR, the premature twins did not survive.

According to police reports, the infants were discovered with discolored skin, multiple bruises, and contusions. One of the babies had multiple fractures, and an autopsy revealed that they had died from multiple injuries caused by a blunt object.

Further probing discovered that the twins had not received necessary check-ups after being discharged from the hospital. Calderon and Vega were subsequently identified as suspects and taken into custody without incident.

Despite claims from Calderon’s sister that she was a devoted mother, reports emerged of past instances of abuse from Vega towards Calderon. In fact, Vega had been previously arrested for unlawfully restraining Calderon. Additionally, it was revealed that he had been out on bond for a previous charge of possession of a controlled substance at the time of their twins’ passing.

As the investigation progressed, it was found that the girls were malnourished and had injuries that were several days or even weeks old. While some family members may believe Calderon did not physically harm the children, they agree that she should be held accountable for the neglect that was uncovered during the investigation.
