Kyiv, Ukraine – A recent strike on a Russian salvage ship, the Kommuna, in occupied Sevastopol has heightened tensions in the region. Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Navy, confirmed the attack but the extent of the damage remains unclear. The incident, which occurred on April 21, has now brought the focus back on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Earlier reports indicated that an anti-ship missile was “repelled” in the same area, causing a small fire on the Russian naval vessel which was quickly extinguished. Social media videos capturing the aftermath of the attack have surfaced, showing a Russian naval vessel on fire. Local media also reported the closure of the Crimea bridge as a result of the incident.
The Kommuna, launched in 1915 and being the oldest ship still in service in the Russian Navy, holds significant historical value. Sevastopol, hosting Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, has been a frequent target for Ukrainian missile and sea drone strikes. Pletenchuk highlighted on March 30 that Russia had withdrawn most major ships from ports in occupied Crimea following successful Ukrainian attacks, signaling an escalation in the ongoing conflict.
In response to the threat of further Ukrainian strikes, Russian forces in occupied Crimea are reportedly constructing barriers at the entrance to Sevastopol Bay. This move aims to strengthen the defenses of Russia’s Novorossiysk port, where the Black Sea fleet has been redeployed from Sevastopol since last year.
