DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – The Dekalb County District Attorney’s office faces challenges in proving the perpetrator behind the tragic death of Brandon Veal. On a fateful day in August 2022, Brandon Veal visited a friend’s residence accompanied by his girlfriend and her three-year-old son.
Initial reports from witnesses revealed that moments after exchanging greetings with his friends, Veal returned to his car with his girlfriend and son, only to hear a sudden gunshot moments later.
The heartbreaking loss of Brandon Veal left his mother, Allison Woodard, shattered and grieving over the senseless violence that claimed her beloved son’s life.
The girlfriend initially claimed that her three-year-old child accidentally fired the fatal shot while sitting on Veal’s lap. However, a detailed coroner’s report indicated that the bullet entered through Veal’s right temple, suggesting that the gunshot came from the passenger side of the car.
Despite the initial arrest of the girlfriend on suspicion of murder, the Dekalb County District Attorney’s office informed the family that they lacked sufficient evidence to press charges in the case.
In a statement, Director of Communications Claire Simms Chaffins expressed condolences to Brandon Veal’s family and outlined the challenges faced in pursuing legal action due to a lack of corroborating witnesses or evidence to meet the legal standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
