Charlotte, North Carolina – Four law enforcement officers were tragically killed in a mass shooting incident in Charlotte, leaving a community in mourning. These brave individuals, who were fathers, husbands, and sons, lost their lives in the line of duty while attempting to serve a felony warrant for 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., who opened fire on them.
Among the fallen officers was Thomas Weeks, a 48-year-old U.S. Marshals Service veteran with 13 years of service. Weeks was described as a hero by USMS Director Ronald Davis, who emphasized his dedication to protecting the community. He leaves behind his wife, Kelly, and four children.
Another officer, Samuel Poloche, a 42-year-old North Carolina Department of Adult Correction veteran with 14 years of experience, also lost his life in the line of duty. Poloche, who had previously served as a probation/parole officer, is survived by his wife and two children.
William Alden Elliott, a 46-year-old North Carolina Department of Adult Correction officer, was also among those who tragically lost their lives. Elliott, who had worked in the Special Operations and Intelligence Unit, was commended for his passion and commitment to his role in protecting the community. He leaves behind his wife and one child.
Officer Joshua Eyer, a 31-year-old 6-year veteran with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, succumbed to his injuries after fighting for his life in the hospital. Eyer, who had recently been named Officer of the Month, was praised for his dedication and service to the community. He is survived by his wife and young son.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has come together to support the affected families. Back The Blue North Carolina has organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for those impacted by the shooting, with over $50,000 raised thus far. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and to ensure justice is served for the fallen officers.
As the community mourns the loss of these dedicated law enforcement officers, their legacy of service and sacrifice will be remembered and honored by all those they touched during their time in uniform.
