Evolutionary Exhibit at Butterfly Pavilion Showcases Cambrian Explosion’s Impact on Invertebrates and Vertebrates

Broomfield, Colorado – A new exhibit at the Butterfly Pavilion in Broomfield sheds light on the evolution of invertebrates, humans, and other vertebrates. The exhibit, titled “Origins: Building Life,” explores the Cambrian explosion, a pivotal period 450 million years ago that transformed the evolutionary landscape on Earth. Sara Stevens, the Director of Animal Collections at the Butterfly Pavilion, describes this time as a “cool radiation of life” that brought about a significant diversity of animals.

The exhibit focuses on the Cambrian explosion and how it shaped the development of animals, including humans, to what they are today. It showcases living descendants of creatures from the Cambrian era, such as pikaia and eurypterid, offering visitors a glimpse into the evolutionary history of invertebrates. The collection on display includes various invertebrates, from isopods to sea scorpions, illustrating the connections between ancient creatures and their modern-day descendants.

Daniel Medeiros, an associate professor at the University of Colorado Boulder specializing in the evolutionary biology of vertebrates, emphasizes the importance of understanding the genetic building blocks shared by all living organisms. He highlights the exhibit as an opportunity for the public to appreciate the significance of invertebrates and their role in the evolutionary process. Medeiros notes that while his research focuses on vertebrates, he finds inspiration in the diverse array of invertebrate species at the Butterfly Pavilion.

The exhibit serves as part of a grant-funded outreach initiative supported by the National Science Foundation, providing a platform for scientists to engage with the public and showcase their research. Featuring a mix of educational displays and interactive experiences, the exhibit aims to foster a deeper connection and understanding of invertebrates among visitors. Additionally, the exhibit underscores the shared genetic and developmental processes that link humans to organisms like butterflies, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living beings.

Located at 6252 W. 104th Ave. in Westminster, the Butterfly Pavilion’s “Origins: Building Life” exhibit welcomes the public to explore the wonders of evolution and biodiversity. Tickets for the exhibit can be purchased online or in person, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of life on Earth. The exhibit invites visitors of all ages to learn, engage, and appreciate the interconnectedness of all living organisms.
