Tampa, Florida – A tragic shooting incident in Tampa, Florida, resulted in the death of two individuals, with the arrest of suspect Whitney Newsome, 37, by the Tampa Police. The incident unfolded on May 3rd around 10:30 am when authorities responded to a ShotSpotter notification and subsequent reports of gunfire in the 900 block of E. 26th Ave.
Upon arrival, officers discovered two victims at the scene – an adult white female in her mid-20s and an adult black male in his early 40s, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, both victims succumbed to their injuries. A third victim, a black female also in her early 40s, managed to escape being shot but was present during the altercation.
Investigations revealed that a dispute between Newsome and the white female victim escalated, prompting the black male victim to intervene. The confrontation moved down E. 26th Ave, involving all three individuals who were acquainted with each other. Newsome, in a violent act, fired at the white female as she tried to flee, eventually collapsing in front of a nearby convenience store.
Following the initial shooting, Newsome targeted the black male and black female victims as they attempted to escape. The male victim was struck by a bullet, while the female fortunately evaded injury. Newsome fled the scene, but authorities swiftly located a handgun along the path he took.
Through diligent detective work and witness cooperation, Newsome was identified as the shooter, leading to his arrest in the vicinity of E. 25th Ave and N. 33rd St by Tampa Police Officers over the weekend. Chief Lee Bercaw commended the efforts of the investigative team, noting the swift resolution that brought justice and closure to the victims’ families.
Charges against Newsome include two counts of Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He was subsequently transported to Orient Road Jail to await legal proceedings. The Tampa community’s collaboration and law enforcement’s dedication were pivotal in swiftly apprehending the suspect and ensuring public safety.
