EMP Threat Awareness Rises in Alabama With South Alabama Liberty Meeting

Enterprise, Alabama – Residents in South Alabama are coming together to learn about the potential threat of an Electromagnetic Pulse Explosion (EMP) and how it could impact their daily lives. The concept of an EMP explosion is unfamiliar to many, but a group called South Alabama Liberty is taking proactive steps to educate the community and discuss preventive measures.

An EMP explosion, whether caused by a deliberate attack or a natural occurrence such as a sunspot, has the potential to disrupt the electric power system and damage electronic devices that rely on computer chips and micro-boards. Despite the seriousness of this threat, there has been limited support for preventive measures at the federal level and among utilities.

Alabama, however, has taken a proactive stance on addressing the EMP threat. In 2017, experts from various fields gathered in Montgomery for the largest meeting on EMP threats, known as the “Secure the Grid Coalition.” This gathering included notable figures such as former CIA Director James Woolsey and Ambassador Hank Cooper, who discussed strategies for preventing and responding to an EMP attack.

Former President Donald Trump also took steps to address the EMP threat by issuing an executive order in 2017, but follow-up on his initiatives has waned since leaving office. Despite this, Alabama’s strategic location, with institutions like the Air University in Montgomery and NASA in Huntsville, positions the state to be a leader in EMP defense efforts.

Now, the Secure the Grid Coalition is presenting a plan to educate citizens in southwest Alabama on grid security measures. Charlie Reynolds, also known as “The Grid Guy,” will lead the discussion on the history of EMP, grid vulnerabilities, and the science behind EMP attacks at an upcoming meeting in Enterprise.

South Alabama Liberty, known for its advocacy against COVID-19 mandates, continues to engage with the community on important issues. By raising awareness about the potential threat of an EMP explosion and promoting preventive measures, groups like South Alabama Liberty are empowering residents to protect themselves and their community.
