ESSEX, MD—An intentional incident of arson led to a devastating two-alarm home explosion in Essex last month. Baltimore County fire investigators determined that the explosion, which occurred in the unit block of Crafton Road (21221) on April 20, 2024, was caused by 52-year-old Michael Greensfelder. Greensfelder allegedly created a fuel/gas explosion that resulted in a fire, destroying the home he shared with his estranged wife and children. Tragically, the family dog lost its life during the incident.

On May 6, Baltimore County Police Department arrested Greensfelder in connection to the arson case. He now faces multiple charges, including arson, malicious burning, destruction of property, and animal cruelty. Greensfelder is currently being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond.

The intentional nature of the explosion has raised concerns among the community, as neighbors express shock and disbelief over the actions of Greensfelder, who reportedly lived with his family in the same residence. The motive behind the arson remains unclear, leaving investigators to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

The aftermath of the explosion has left the community shaken, with residents coming together to support the family affected by the incident. The loss of their beloved pet has added to the grief felt by those who knew the family, as they grapple with the senseless destruction caused by Greensfelder’s actions.
