Queens Man Indicted for Murder of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller in Traffic Stop

New York City, New York – A 34-year-old man from Woodside, Queens, has been indicted on murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller. The incident took place during a traffic stop in Queens, where Diller, a 31-year-old husband and father, tragically lost his life in March.

The suspect, Guy Rivera, was arraigned on Tuesday for first- and second-degree murder charges for the death of Detective Diller and first- and second-degree attempted murder for allegedly shooting at an NYPD sergeant in Far Rockaway. Additionally, Rivera, along with co-defendant Lindy Jones, faces weapon charges related to criminal possession of a firearm.

Rivera, who is recovering from a gunshot wound at Jamaica Hospital, pleaded not guilty in court as Diller’s family looked on. If convicted, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. The next court appearance for Rivera is scheduled for July 22.

The tragic events unfolded as Diller and another officer approached a vehicle where Rivera and Jones were seated. According to court statements, Rivera shot Diller in the stomach when the officers attempted to engage with the suspects. Despite the gun jamming during a subsequent attempted shooting, Diller succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Following the incident, a search of the vehicle revealed a loaded firearm with a scratched-off serial number inside the glove compartment. Prosecutors also disclosed that Rivera confessed to carrying a weapon in his rectal area. Rivera’s criminal history includes previous convictions for assault and drug offenses, shedding light on his troubled past.

As details surrounding the confrontation in Far Rockaway continue to emerge, the focus remains on seeking justice for Detective Diller and his family. The tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the ongoing efforts to combat illegal weapons on the streets.

Detective Diller, who had received multiple recognitions for his service with the NYPD, leaves behind his wife Stephanie and their young son Ryan. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed gratitude for the serious charges brought against the defendant, emphasizing the need to continue efforts to remove illegal firearms from communities. The investigation into the circumstances leading to Diller’s death remains ongoing as the community mourns the loss of a dedicated officer.
