Shooting at Hertel Avenue Bar Results in Fatal Incident and Closure by City Officials

Buffalo, New York – A tragic incident unfolded on the patio of Del Denby Tavern on Hertel Avenue early Tuesday, resulting in a fatal shooting, as reported by Buffalo police. The victim, a 46-year-old city resident whose identity remains undisclosed, was shot around 1:11 a.m. at the bar located at 1553 Hertel, just west of Parkside Avenue. Despite being rushed to Erie County Medical Center by ambulance, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Chief of Detectives Craig Macy revealed during a news conference that the shooter and the victim were acquainted, indicating that the act was not random. The two individuals were seen inside the bar consuming drinks before moving outside and engaging in a heated argument that tragically escalated into violence.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist with their ongoing investigation. Chief Macy disclosed that detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage from numerous cameras in the area, including a city camera stationed at the corner of Hertel and Parkside. Additionally, previous calls for shooting incidents at the bar have been documented.

Following the shooting, city officials promptly issued a “Cease All Operations” notice for Del Denby Tavern, citing the imperative need to maintain peace and order. The bar owners are required to present their case before the city’s Permits and Inspections Department to potentially resume operations, pending a scheduled hearing.

This unfortunate event marks the fourth homicide in Buffalo within an 11-day span, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced measures to curb such incidents of violence in the city.
