Ventura, California – Thirty-three years after the discovery of Danielle Clause’s body in Ventura, California, authorities have finally identified her killer through the use of DNA and forensic evidence. The remains of the 42-year-old victim were found near downtown Ventura on July 16, 1991, with signs of blunt force injuries and sexual assault.
The case had gone cold for over 25 years until Officer Tyler Buck decided to re-examine the evidence in collaboration with the Ventura Police Department. Through advancements in forensic genetic genealogy, they were able to create a family tree for the suspect, ultimately identifying him as Larry Devon Welch, who had passed away in 1999.
After retesting crime scene evidence and conducting extensive genetic analysis, investigators reached out to Welch’s living relatives for DNA samples to confirm their findings. With the help of modern technology and collaboration with various agencies, they were able to confirm that the DNA found at the crime scene belonged to Larry Welch.
Additionally, investigative efforts revealed that Welch had connections to the victim at the time of her murder, owning a white Ford Ranger and maintaining a P.O. box in Ventura. Despite the challenges posed by limited resources, investigators were able to piece together the puzzle that led to closure for Clause’s family after decades of uncertainty.
Marcie Forte, Clause’s sister, expressed relief and closure upon learning the identity of her sister’s killer. She emphasized that her sister was more than just a victim of a heinous crime but a beloved individual with a vibrant spirit that was unjustly taken away.
