Belgorod, Russia – An apartment building in the Belgorod region of Russia partially collapsed on Sunday, with Russia attributing the incident to Ukrainian strikes across the border. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukraine utilized a Tochka-U tactical missile system and other weapons to target residential areas in Belgorod around 11:40 a.m. Moscow time. As a result, Russia’s air defenses intercepted 12 missiles, but fragments from one of the missiles damaged a residential building in Belgorod, leading to injuries and reports of possible fatalities.
Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of the Belgorod region later disclosed that the roof of the building collapsed during the evacuation, leaving at least 19 people injured and casualties unconfirmed. While Ukraine has yet to officially respond to the accusations, tensions remain high between the neighboring countries. The location of Belgorod, situated on the border with northeastern Ukraine, has been a frequent target for shelling due to the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
On Friday, Moscow initiated an offensive in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, prompting Ukraine to reinforce its defenses in response. Russia claimed to have gained control over several settlements just across the border in Ukraine. In a separate incident, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported the destruction of two Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod region, further escalating the situation.
Pro-Ukrainian sources suggested that the collapse of the residential building might be a ruse by Russia to justify increased military operations in northeastern Ukraine. On the other hand, Russia’s investigative committee opened a criminal investigation, laying blame on Ukrainian shelling for the damage. Amidst the chaos, rescue efforts in Belgorod were briefly halted due to fears of additional missile strikes, causing injuries to three rescuers at the scene.
Governor Gladkov condemned the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stating that the city of Belgorod and its residents endured heavy shelling. Tragically, one woman lost her life, and dozens were injured in the attacks. The situation remains tense as both countries continue to exchange accusations and engage in military actions along the border. The uncertainty and risk of further escalation loom over the region, leaving residents fearful for their safety and security.
