YAKIMA, Wash. – A 71-year-old man was shot in self-defense after reportedly threatening a family with a gun on their property. The incident took place on May 11 at 3:30 p.m., prompting a response from the Yakima Police Department.
Upon arrival, police discovered the 71-year-old deceased from a gunshot wound. The shooter, a 27-year-old individual, informed authorities that he acted to protect his family. A pistol was recovered from the deceased man by the police.
Witnesses corroborated the shooter’s account through video evidence and statements. Subsequently, the 27-year-old was questioned by the Yakima County Prosecuting office and later released.
Yakima County Prosecutor Joe Brusic emphasized the evaluation of self-defense in such cases. He noted the necessity of presenting evidence demonstrating the individual’s perceived threat to life or the lives of others in immediate danger.
Brusic highlighted the condition for justifying deadly force as being faced with a deadly weapon warranting a defensive response. He underlined the right of individuals to defend themselves when in a place where they have a lawful presence, such as their residence.
While the investigation remains ongoing, Brusic stressed the significance of video evidence in substantiating claims of self-defense. He mentioned collaborative efforts with law enforcement to collect surveillance footage from nearby establishments, aiding in establishing the sequence of events.
The Yakima County Prosecutor’s office affirmed the need for a comprehensive review of evidence before reaching a formal decision. Individuals with pertinent information were encouraged to reach out to Sergeant Noah Johnson of the Yakima Police Department’s Major Crime Unit.
