Maricopa County, Arizona: The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday that none of the seven individuals accused in the murder of Preston Lord will face the death penalty. Three of the defendants, Dominic Turner, Taylor Sherman, and Treston Bailey, were eligible for capital punishment, while the other four were minors at the time of the crime.
Lord was fatally assaulted at a Halloween party in Queen Creek, with his death later ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. The suspects arrested in connection with Lord’s murder include Talan Renner, Talyn Vigil, William Owen Hines, Turner, Sherman, Billey, and Jacob Meisner, all of whom have pleaded not guilty.
Authorities uncovered crucial evidence, including text messages, in the days following Lord’s death, helping to piece together the case against the accused individuals. A 1,100-page police report released by the Queen Creek Police Department in March shed light on the months-long investigation that involved numerous interviews, video reviews, and phone message analysis.
During the investigation, detectives delved into disturbing text messages exchanged among the alleged perpetrators, with one message allegedly confessing to the assault on Lord. Renner reportedly mentioned in a message that he was part of the altercation that led to Lord’s tragic demise, stating, “Got in a fight… killed a kid.. guess I don’t know my own strength.”
The prosecution anticipates the trial for the defendants to take place in 2025, marking a significant step in seeking justice for the tragic death of Preston Lord. The case continues to unfold as authorities work diligently to bring closure to the family and friends of the victim.
