Knife-wielding man guilty of assaulting victim in Wapato, faces sentencing in September

YAKIMA, Wash. – A 43-year-old man in Wapato was convicted on Wednesday for a violent knife attack, as announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington. Joey Anthony Andy faces sentencing on September 17 after being found guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon.

During the trial, evidence revealed that on April 4, 2023, a man leaving the Noah’s Ark Homeless Shelter in Wapato was accosted by Andy, who accused him of theft. Andy proceeded to physically assault the man, pulling out a knife and inflicting a four-inch gash on the side of the victim’s head that required 14 staples to close.

After the assault, the injured man sought aid at Noah’s Ark, where authorities were alerted. The Wapato Police Department apprehended Andy in a nearby neighborhood following a brief pursuit. U.S. Attorney Vanessa Waldref emphasized the prosecution of violent crimes within Tribal lands as a top priority, condemning Andy’s brazen daylight attack for causing severe harm to the victim.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by violent confrontations and the importance of swiftly addressing such acts to maintain community safety. As the legal process unfolds, the severity of Andy’s actions underscores the need for accountability and justice in cases of assault with deadly weapons. The upcoming sentencing will reflect the gravity of the harm inflicted and the need to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals within communities remains a core concern, highlighting the crucial role of law enforcement and legal institutions in addressing and preventing violent crimes. The aftermath of the attack underscores the resilience and cooperation necessary to heal and seek justice in the face of adversity.
