WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – An apartment complex in West Sacramento was rocked by an explosion on Sunday morning, leading to the displacement of numerous individuals, as reported by the West Sacramento Fire Department. The incident, occurring on the 500 block of 7th Street, prompted a swift response from firefighters just after 10:30 a.m.
Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters encountered significant damage, pointing to the aftermath of an explosion. Amidst the chaos, two individuals were found with minor injuries, fortunately not requiring hospitalization. However, the impact of the explosion was felt across 14 occupied units in the complex, resulting in the displacement of 34 residents.
One of the affected units was undergoing construction at the time of the incident, adding to the complexity of the situation. Firefighters immediately initiated efforts to secure the building temporarily, awaiting further investigation by construction crews. The scene was marked by shattered windows and a portion of the wall that had collapsed.
As authorities strive to determine the cause of the blast, residents shared their shock at the unexpected turn of events. Savina Hernaneez, a resident, recalled the initial fear that gripped her, mistaking the explosion for a bombing. Another resident, Monique Andrade, expressed disbelief at the unfolding events, crediting luck for not being in her unit when the blast occurred.
While the investigation continues, concerns have been raised regarding a possible gas leak prior to the explosion. Deputy Chief Mark Cullisoa confirmed that such reports were being looked into by the West Sacramento Fire Department. Additionally, crews from PG&E and local fire departments were seen assessing the damage caused by what some residents believed was a water heater explosion.
Despite the magnitude of the incident, Deputy Chief Cullisoa highlighted the minimal injuries sustained, underscoring the swift response of emergency responders. The American Red Cross was called upon to provide assistance to the affected individuals, although uncertainties loomed regarding accommodation for the displaced residents.
