Sydney, Australia – A police officer in Sydney’s city center displayed remarkable bravery after being stabbed in a daytime attack, according to NSW Premier Chris Minns. Constable Elvis Poa, 35, is currently in stable condition at a hospital following the incident near Hyde Park on Sunday afternoon.
Poa and another officer were carrying out traffic duties when a 35-year-old man approached them at the corner of Castlereagh and Park streets. The alleged attacker then reportedly pulled out a 30cm long knife and stabbed Constable Poa in the back of the head multiple times.
Despite his injuries, Poa chased after the assailant with the assistance of a female constable along Park Street and into Hyde Park. The suspect was eventually directed by other officers to drop the knife and was subsequently tasered and taken into custody.
Premier Chris Minns commended Constable Poa’s actions, stating, “The officer involved showed enormous courage in not only being the victim of an alleged assault but also apprehending the person responsible for the offense.”
