Explosion Survivor Gary Devonshire Rebuilds Home Lost in Tragic Incident

Lancaster, Pennsylvania – Gary Devonshire finds himself longing for the serenity of his rural home in Rapho Township. He reminisces about the tranquility and the charming view of fireworks during the Fourth of July celebrations in neighboring towns. The absence of his koi pond, where he cherished caring for fish for over ten years, adds to his yearning for his peaceful abode.

On July 5, 2023, Devonshire’s life was drastically altered when a propane gas explosion tore through the public works shed adjacent to the Rapho Township municipal building on North Colebrook Road. The force of the blast, felt across two counties, caused significant devastation within a quarter-mile radius, shattering windows, collapsing walls and ceilings, and scattering pink and gray insulation far and wide.

The aftermath of the explosion led to the condemnation and acquisition of two neighboring properties by the township. One house was demolished and reconstructed, while another neighbor was able to return home by the end of 2023. Despite the upheaval, Devonshire remains hopeful about revitalizing his koi pond once electricity is reinstated in his residence.

The extensive damage inflicted on Devonshire’s bi-level home, a popular architectural style from the 1960s, necessitated extensive repairs. The blast obliterated his chimney, caused ceilings to collapse, and dislodged cabinets from walls. With the interior stripped down to its framework and meticulously reconstructed, the total cost of restoration amounted to nearly $200,000.

Following the disaster, Devonshire promptly filed a claim with his insurance provider and sought temporary lodging at a hotel. Since August, he and his 11-year-old twins, Wyatt and Wytleyy, have resided in a nearby apartment, where they continue to navigate the arduous process of rebuilding their lives.

Grateful that his children were not present at the time of the explosion, Devonshire reflects on the emotional rollercoaster of the past year. While acknowledging the challenges of dealing with insurers and overseeing reconstruction efforts, he maintains a sense of optimism for the future. As he monitors the progress of repairs at his home, Devonshire recognizes the resilience and fortitude required to overcome such a harrowing ordeal.

The horrifying experience has left Devonshire with invaluable insights, urging others to review their insurance coverage for unforeseeable circumstances. Despite the trials and tribulations he has endured, Devonshire remains steadfast in his determination to rebuild and reclaim the tranquility of his cherished home in Rapho Township.
