Arrest Made in Sacramento Oak Park Neighborhood Shooting, Suspect Held Without Bail

Sacramento, CA — Authorities in Sacramento have apprehended 22-year-old Floyd Antonio Smith in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in the Oak Park area earlier this month. The incident, which claimed the life of 53-year-old Herbert Edward Ballwin, occurred on June 2 in a residential neighborhood just a short distance from McClatchy Park.

The Sacramento Police Department took to social media on Tuesday to announce Smith’s arrest, which took place last Thursday. Smith, a Sacramento resident, faces homicide charges related to Ballwin’s death.

Ballwin was identified as the victim by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office following the early June shooting in the 3400 block of 33rd Street. Responding to a distress call around 7 p.m., police officers discovered him with gunshot injuries. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the officers and subsequent medical attention at a local hospital, Ballwin succumbed to his wounds.

Smith’s legal proceedings began with his arraignment on Monday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court. Court records indicate he is set to appear again on July 1 for further proceedings. Until then, he remains detained at the Sacramento County Jail without bail.

This tragic event has raised concerns among community members about safety and the prevalence of gun violence in their neighborhood. The proximity of the shooting to McClatchy Park, a popular local gathering spot, adds to the community’s anxiety.

Local community leaders have expressed their distress over the incident and are calling for increased efforts to curb violence in the area. They emphasize the need for more robust community policing and intervention programs that can prevent such incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, the Sacramento Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward to assist in bringing clarity and justice to this case. Meanwhile, the community waits in hope for effective measures that will ensure their safety and prevent further loss of life.
