Higginson Highway Hazard Alert: Spike in Traffic Fatalities Urges Stricter Safety Measures and Community Vigilance

Durban, South Africa — A concerning spike in traffic incidents, particularly those involving pedestrians, on Higginson Highway has prompted authorities to urge extra caution. Recent data underscores an alarming rise in roadway deaths, positioning KwaZulu-Natal as the province with the highest percentage of road fatalities in South Africa for 2019.

The incidents, often fatal and involving pedestrians, highlight a broader issue of road safety. A comprehensive report by Stats SA on ‘Road Transport Accident Deaths in South Africa, 2007 to 2019’ revealed that 24.4% of such deaths occurred in KZN in 2019, with pedestrians comprising a significant portion of these fatalities. The complexity of factors leading to these accidents includes human error such as distracted driving, speeding, and impairment due to alcohol, alongside vehicle defects and inadequate roadway infrastructure.

Traffic safety experts emphasize the importance of stringent enforcement of traffic laws, including speed limits and drunk driving prohibitions. Additionally, there is a call for investment in road infrastructure improvements like pedestrian crossings and safer intersections to enhance visibility and reduce risks for both drivers and pedestrians.

One harrowing case cited involved a 55-year-old man, Sipho Phungula, who was fatally struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The incident occurred on the evening of June 29, as confirmed by W/O Collin Chetty of Bayview SAPS. Efforts continue as local law enforcement seeks leads to address this culpable homicide.

Det W/O G Perumal is actively involved in the investigation and urges the public to come forward with any information that could lead to resolving the case. Community members are asked to contact him directly with any potential leads.

In light of these tragic incidents, W/O Chetty issued advice to pedestrians advising against using Higginson Highway, especially during the evening hours. He highlighted the necessity of wearing visibly bright or reflective clothing if travel is unavoidable and stressed the importance of crossing roads at designated points to avoid mishaps. For motorists, adherence to speed limits and heightened caution, particularly at night, are crucial.

Compounding the traffic safety issues are the region’s environmental challenges, which include severe weather conditions. Garrith Jamison of ALS Paramedics has reported problems ranging from vehicular accidents due to debris, such as fallen branches and overturned trucks, to residential fire risks from blown over open flames. He further cautioned against the dangers posed by high winds, particularly to high-rise vehicles and those traveling near coastal areas experiencing large swells.

The combination of hazardous road conditions, poor visibility, and risky driver behavior underscores a critical need for community awareness and preventive actions in safeguarding all road users. Efforts continue on multiple fronts to address these challenges, aiming to significantly reduce the incidence of road-related injuries and fatalities.
