The incidents, often fatal and involving pedestrians, highlight a broader issue of road safety. A comprehensive report by Stats SA on ‘Road Transport Accident Deaths in South Africa, 2007 to 2019’ revealed that 24.4% of such deaths occurred in KZN in 2019, with pedestrians comprising a significant portion of these fatalities. The complexity of factors leading to these accidents includes human error such as distracted driving, speeding, and impairment due to alcohol, alongside vehicle defects and inadequate roadway infrastructure.
