Tragic Fourth of July: Man Charged Following Deadly Stabbing Spree at Huntington Beach Celebration

Huntington Beach, Calif. – A tragic incident unfolded during a Fourth of July celebration in Huntington Beach where a man allegedly went on a stabbing spree under the influence of alcohol and hallucinogens. The attack left two dead and three others injured, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Logan Christopher Kelley from Redondo Beach, was reportedly intoxicated and had consumed hallucinogenic drugs prior to the attack on unsuspecting celebrators. The violence erupted amidst the holiday festivities, casting a shadow over what is traditionally a family-friendly event.

In response to Kelley’s alleged rampage, he faces substantial legal charges including two felony counts of murder with special circumstances due to the multiple victims, three felony counts of attempted murder, and additional charges related to assault and battery on a law enforcement officer. Authorities have also added an enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon.

The gravitas of the special circumstance murder charges suggests that Kelley could face the most severe penalties, including the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole. The District Attorney’s Office is preparing to review these possibilities through a special circumstance committee.

The assault took place near the intersection of 16th Street and Pecan Avenue around 11:15 p.m. on July 4. Kelley reportedly initiated the attacks without provocation, targeting individuals he did not know. The victims included Eric Hodges, 42, and William Collins, 47, who succumbed to their injuries, while three other men sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

In the chaos that ensued, a brave teenage boy was assaulted by Kelley as he attempted to detain him, waiting for police to arrive. This act of courage potentially prevented further harm before law enforcement could intervene.

Eyewitnesses and local authorities have described the scene as chaotic and filled with panic as attendees hurried to escape the violence. Emergency medical responders provided immediate aid, which likely prevented additional fatalities and severe injuries.

This incident has deeply shaken the Huntington Beach community, a location known for its vibrant public events and strong community spirit. The violence has prompted discussions about public safety and the need for increased security measures during large public gatherings.

Mayor Kim Carr expressed devastation over the incident, emphasizing that the tragedy has left the community in mourning. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those lost”, Carr stated, confirming the community’s commitment to support the affected families and consider responsive measures to ensure public safety.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community seeks to heal and rebuild the sense of security shattered by this unexpected act of violence.
