Milwaukee, WI — Tragedy struck Dineen Park on Milwaukee’s west side early Monday when a teenage girl was killed and nine others were injured in a mass shooting during a late-night gathering. Authorities said the gathering, predominately consisting of teenagers, was spurred by a social media invitation to a car party.
According to police reports, gunfire erupted shortly before 12:30 a.m., following a verbal confrontation among attendees. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that by the time first responders arrived at the scene, a 17-year-old woman had died from gunshot wounds. Other victims included eight other teens with gunshot injuries, ranging in age from 15 to 18, and a 19-year-old woman who was trampled in the ensuing chaos.
Seven of the gunshot victims are currently reported to be in stable condition, while one 18-year-old male is listed in critical condition. The injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Meanwhile, authorities noted that two houses on N. 66th Street and W. Vienna Avenue and on North 67th Street and West Vienna Avenue were struck by bullets, although no injuries were reported in those homes.
The incident has heightened concerns about safety in the neighborhood. Milwaukee resident Cody Lowe, who heard the shots, told reporters, “It was crazy, crazy loud. I thought it was just one or two shots, but it just kept going. We all ducked and hid, and called the cops. They came right away.”
Local authorities acknowledge the urgency of the violence and its impact on community safety. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office and local police are actively investigating the shooting. They are reviewing surveillance video that captured the incident, which shows almost 45 seconds of continuous gunfire, shattering the calm of the night.
As of now, no arrests have been made and the suspect or suspects remain at large. The sheriff’s office has yet from authorities and family members echoes the community’s heartbreak but also their resolve for justice and peace.
Milwaukee Mayor, speaking about the incident, emphasized the need for community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement to quell the surge in violence. “We must work together as a community to prevent these senseless acts and ensure our neighborhoods are safe for everyone,” the Mayor stated, suggesting a possible increase in security measures.
The investigation is still ongoing, with law enforcement urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward to help identify and locate those responsible. Meanwhile, the community holds on to hope that increased surveillance and law enforcement presence might restore a sense of safety to the area.
