FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Broward County courtroom witnessed the sentencing of two young women to 25 years in prison each for their involvement in a murder that has profoundly impacted the local community. Christie Parisien, 20, and Jaslyn Smith, 19, were convicted for the 2021 murder of 18-year-old Dwight “DJ” Grant, which prosecutors described as stemming from a romantic vendetta.
The incident that led to Grant’s death began when Parisien, then 17, deceitfully invited him to a remote stairway in their apartment complex. There, with 17-year-old Andre Clements, they initiated a prolonged and violent assault. Authorities reported that Clements, who is accused of masterminding the attack, used a sword to inflict the fatal wounds on Grant’s neck and torso. Subsequently, the assailants discarded Grant’s body over a railing near his residence, only 30 feet from his own home.
The community has been left in shock by the brutality of the murder. Following the discovery, one neighbor expressed profound sorrow, noting Grant was a wonderful young man loved deeply by his mother, and the heinousness of the act was unfathomable.
Further investigations into the motive revealed that jealousy was at the heart of the crime. Clements allegedly orchestrated the murder after learning about Grant’s past romantic involvement with his ex-girlfriend. In a plan driven by revenge, Parisien was recruited first, who then involved Smith.
Both Parisien and Smith entered guilty pleas to reduced charges of second-degree murder, alongside charges of tampering with evidence and conspiracy to commit murder. Their pleas did not significantly lessen the severity of their sentences, marking them each to serve 25 years in prison.
During the sentencing, an emotional statement from Grant’s mother, Madge Emile, was presented. Emile mournfully recounted the traditions she shared with her son, emphasizing the permanent void his absence would leave in her life. She lamented over lost future moments, highlighting the grim reality of her son’s untimely death.
Meanwhile, Clements awaits his trial set for January 13, facing charges that include first-degree murder, evidence tampering, and conspiracy to commit murder. His actions have indeed set a somber tone for the ramifications of youthful indiscretions escalated to violent crime.
