Los Angeles — Renowned actor Drake Hogestyn, best recognized for his portrayal of John Black on the iconic soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” has died at the age of 70. Hogestyn passed away on September 28, 2024, succumbing to pancreatic cancer in his Los Angeles home.
Born on September 29, 1953, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn’s early career aspirations were rooted in sports rather than the dramatic arts. He attended the University of South Florida on a baseball scholarship, achieving dual degrees in microbiology and applied sciences. His prowess on the baseball diamond caught the attention of major league scouts, leading to his draft by the New York Yankees in 1976.
Hogestyn’s baseball career was short-lived, however, as injuries forced him off the field permanently by 1978, after a stint with the Yankees’ farm team, the Oneonta Yankees, where he notably hit a grand slam home run. Transitioning from sports to acting, he joined Columbia Pictures’ acting training program, landing his first significant television role in the 1980s series “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”
His breakthrough came in 1986 when Hogestyn joined the cast of “Days of Our Lives” as a mysterious character initially known only as “The Pawn.” This role would evolve into John Black, marking the beginning of a 38-year tenure on the show, with Hogestyn appearing in over 4,200 episodes. John Black’s character, known for his varied roles from police officer to secret agent, captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.
Hogestyn’s on-screen chemistry with co-star Deidre Hall, who played Dr. Marlena Evans, was particularly celebrated, making “John and Marlena” one of television’s most beloved couples. This partnership was among the defining features of Hogestyn’s career, earning the duo accolades including the Favorite Couple award in 2005.
The actor’s dedication to his craft was echoed by colleagues, including Alison Sweeney, who described him as passionate about every aspect of his work. “He cared about every single scene, every person. He loved ‘Days,’ the fans, and shared that passion with everyone on set,” Sweeney said.
Christopher Sean, who portrayed Hogestyn’s on-screen son, expressed a deep personal loss. “I will always love you. You were more than just my TV father, in my eyes you were my dad. Thank you for everything you taught me and the love you gave me. The world lost a true Hero,” Sean stated.
Beyond “Days of Our Lives,” Hogestyn appeared in other television roles including “Criminal Minds” and starred in the Hallmark movie “Christmas Tree Lane.” Despite his successful acting career, Hogestyn frequently returned to his Indiana roots, often seen at local establishments like Cindy’s Diner and participating in charity events like the Mad Anthonys Pro-Am golf tournament during the 1990s.
Hogestyn’s legacy extends off-screen to his personal life, having been married to Victoria Post since December 31, 1986, with whom he had four children: Whitney, Alexandra, Rachael, and Ben. He was also a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren.
The official Instagram account for “Days of Our Lives” acknowledged Hogestyn’s brave battle with cancer, noting his incredible strength and determination. His death marks not only the loss of a venerable television star but also of a man who inspired many with his resilience and passion for life. Hogestyn’s portrayal of John Black has left an indelible mark on daytime television, ensuring his legacy will endure in the hearts of fans and colleagues alike.
