NĀNĀKULI, HI – A dispute at a local Wendy’s, involving a disagreement over the rearrangement of furniture, escalated to a fatal confrontation early Sunday, leaving one employee dead and the community in shock. The incident has spurred an investigation by local authorities and ignited discussions around customer-employee interactions.
The altercation began when 22-year-old employee Kashka Otto and a colleague approached 60-year-old Reynaldo Cheney, asking him to refrain from moving tables inside the restaurant. According to police reports, when Cheney disregarded the request, the employees attempted to escort him outside, resulting in a physical struggle in the parking lot. It was during this scuffle that Cheney allegedly stabbed Otto.
Both Otto and his colleague were swiftly transported to a hospital. Despite medical efforts, Otto succumbed to his injuries, while his colleague survived. The seriousness of the confrontation was underscored by the Honolulu Police Department’s confirmation of the fatality and the severe injuries sustained by the second employee.
At the scene, officers arrested Cheney, who now faces charges including first-degree attempted murder, second-degree murder, and second-degree attempted murder. Authorities also discovered that Cheney had an existing warrant for illegal camping.
Those who knew Otto remember him as a warm, smiling presence, especially visible when interacting with customers at the restaurant. Sophie Tabag, Otto’s co-worker, reflected on his consistently cheerful demeanor, while Kevin Wong, a former volleyball teammate, described him as gentle despite his physical stature.
Cheney, known to nearby residents as having been living in a makeshift setup near the beach for several years, adds a complex layer to the narrative, intertwining community ties with the tragic event.
This incident marks yet another violent event at a Wendy’s in recent years. Nationwide, these situations bring to the forefront concerns about the safety of both employees and customers in fast-food outlets, following similar episodes where disputes escalated into violence, including a customer’s death in Arizona in 2022 and a high-profile police shooting in Atlanta in 2020 after a confrontation at Wendy’s.
The local community is mourning the loss of a young man described as kind-hearted and friendly, with an ongoing investigation attempting to piece together the events that led to this tragic outcome. The authorities are urging witnesses and anyone with further information to come forward as they continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding this devastating altercation. As Cheney remains in custody, many are left to ponder the measures necessary to prevent such incidents in the future.
