MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — A domestic tragedy in Middletown led to the arrest of a 44-year-old woman accused of fatally stabbing her 72-year-old mother, authorities said Friday. The suspect, Mekeshia Lattimore, faces murder charges following the incident that occurred Wednesday night in this small community north of Cincinnati.
Police were called to a residence on the 600 block of 14th Avenue at around 11:24 p.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they discovered Minnie Lewis with multiple stab wounds. Despite prompt medical attention and transportation to Atrium Medical Center, Lewis was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
The scene described by authorities was grim. According to witness testimony, Lattimore was allegedly seen attacking her mother as she sat in a recliner. The witness, Lewis’s son who was also in the home, intervened, yelling at his sister to stop and subsequently calling 911.
Lattimore was taken into custody at the scene without further incident and is currently detained at Middletown City Jail. The motives behind the attack remain under investigation, as Lattimore has yet to make any statements regarding the incident. She appeared in court for the first time on Friday afternoon.
The local community has been left reeling by the violence. Neighbors spoke highly of Lewis, describing her as a compassionate and kind individual. “She was caring. I can’t help but cry. I just can’t believe she’s gone. I’m really going to miss her,” said Doris Williams, who lives next door.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and mental health. Studies suggest that high-stress situations can exacerbate underlying mental health issues and contribute to domestic violence. The ongoing investigation seeks to determine what factors might have played a role in this tragic event.
Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward as they continue to piece together the events that led to Lewis’s death. The tragedy has undoubtedly prompted a broader discussion within the community on how best to address and prevent such violent incidents in the future.
