Children Slashed by Relative with Meat Cleaver

NEW YORK, NY – A tragic scene unfolded in a Bensonhurst home early Monday when four young girls were viciously attacked by a family member. The alleged assailant, armed with a meat cleaver, left the children with life-threatening injuries. Thanks to a courageous 911 call from an 11-year-old and the swift response from NYPD officers, the children are expected to survive.

The distress call came at 10:15 a.m., as the young girl, unable to provide her address, alerted authorities to the ongoing assault. Utilizing technology, police pinpointed the location and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they were led into the apartment by an uninjured child and heard screams from within.

Officers forced entry and confronted 49-year-old Lung Chen Chen, who refused to drop his weapon and moved towards them. In response, officers fired their weapons, neutralizing the threat. The harrowing encounter was recorded on body cameras.

Inside, the officers found the young victims suffering from significant injuries. Emergency medical teams administered immediate care before transporting the girls to the hospital, where they are expected to recover. The suspect was also hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators are working to establish Chen’s relationship with the victims and the motive behind the attack. Initial reports suggest he is a relative and may have a history of mental illness.

Commissioner Jessica Tisch lauded the officers and EMS for their decisive actions, which undoubtedly saved the girls’ lives. The bravery of the 11-year-old caller and another child who sought help from a neighbor were also recognized.

The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division continues to probe the incident, seeking to understand the circumstances leading to this horrific event. As the investigation unfolds, the community grapples with the shock of the brutal attack.
