ROANOKE, Va. – The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center has reported a tragic incident that occurred on Christmas Eve at their facility. A young bald eagle, weighing just under ten pounds, was admitted to the shelter from Wythe County after surviving for over a week with a gunshot wound in its wing. Despite efforts to save the bird, the injuries were too severe, and the eagle did not survive.
The rescue mission for the juvenile bald eagle involved a team effort from the Department of Wildlife Resources, Appalachian Wildlife Management, and concerned citizens. Unfortunately, X-rays revealed that the bird had suffered from a gunshot wound, leading to bullet fragments in its wing. This devastating news was confirmed when the bird was unable to recover from its injuries and passed away.
Chester Leonard, the executive director of the SVWC, expressed deep sadness over the loss, emphasizing that animals deserve better treatment. He also condemned the deliberate act of shooting the bald eagle, highlighting the severity of the crime in the eyes of the law.
The killing of a bald eagle is considered a serious offense and is subject to significant penalties under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The SVWC has labeled this incident as a “horrific crime” and is urging anyone with information to contact the Department of Wildlife Resources.
The loss of the young bald eagle has sparked outrage and disbelief within the community, as wildlife advocates continue to emphasize the need for heightened awareness and protection of these majestic birds. The senseless act of violence against such a symbol of freedom and resilience serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts and the enforcement of wildlife protection laws.
