Gun Malfunction Prevents ‘Mass-Casualty’ in Las Vegas Gym Shooting

LAS VEGAS, NV – A tragic shooting at a local gym on Friday has left the community in shock as police identify the gunman as 34-year-old Daniel Ortega from North Las Vegas. The incident, which claimed the life of a gym employee, has raised questions about Ortega’s motives.

Authorities are investigating why Ortega, who was a member of the gym and worked as a bellman on the Strip, entered the facility carrying a rifle. Surveillance video captures Ortega’s entrance, and moments later, the harrowing chase and shooting of the employee.

Assistant Sheriff Andrew Walsh reported that Ortega fired 24 rounds before his weapon jammed, a malfunction that potentially spared more lives. “The malfunction was a pivotal factor in preventing a larger tragedy,” Walsh noted.

Despite thorough inquiries, investigators have not found a link between Ortega and the victim, leaving the motive unclear. The situation escalated rapidly, concluding with police fatally shooting Ortega as he exited the gym.

In addition to the fatality, three others were injured. Police are appealing to anyone with information about Ortega or the victim to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Attempts to reach Ortega’s family for comment were unsuccessful, as they have chosen to remain silent during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of the violence and seeking answers to the questions that remain.
