Woman Dies After Tree Falls on GW Parkway

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Cleanup efforts continue on the George Washington Memorial Parkway following severe storms that caused the deaths of two individuals. The section between Bellevue Boulevard and Alexandria Avenue remains closed as workers clear debris and assess further risks.

Dr. Marla Holden, a 61-year-old project manager and photographer, was one of the victims. She was returning home from work when a tree fell on her vehicle. Known for her determination and achievements, Dr. Holden’s passing has left a void in her community.

Another woman lost her life under similar circumstances on Frye Road. Her identity has not yet been released by Fairfax County authorities. Despite attempts by good Samaritans to rescue Dr. Holden, she could not be saved.

The National Park Service is diligently working to remove fallen trees and evaluate potential dangers from weakened trees. The closure is expected to last through the morning commute, but it may extend further as safety assessments continue.

Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes during the cleanup period. The incident has raised concerns about infrastructure resilience during extreme weather events, sparking discussions on preventive measures.

The community is urged to remain vigilant and patient as efforts to restore safety and normalcy proceed. Authorities will provide updates on the situation and any new developments regarding the victims.
