Umlazi, South Africa — A devastating mass shooting at a local tavern in Umlazi, south of Durban, claimed the lives of eight people and highlighted the persistent issue of gun violence plaguing the region. The incident occurred late on the night of May 16, 2025, during a gathering at the venue, spurring a swift and ongoing investigation by South African authorities.
According to police reports, multiple gunmen stormed into the tavern, located in the Zama informal settlement, and opened fire indiscriminately on the patrons inside. The assault resulted in the deaths of six men and two women, ages ranging between 22 and 40. Emergency responders, upon arriving at the scene past 9 p.m., described a harrowing sight of victims lying in pools of blood, each with multiple gunshot wounds.
Garrith Jamieson, a spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, confirmed that all eight victims were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severe nature of their injuries. In response to the violence, provincial authorities have appointed a specialized investigative team to determine the motives behind the gunfire, though early insights suggest robbery was unlikely the primary cause.
The tragedy has reignited concerns over safety in Umlazi, prompting KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli to visit the crime scene on May 17. Ntuli emphasized the need for increased community involvement in crime prevention efforts. He highlighted that a similar incident had occurred in the same township in 2022, marking an alarming trend.
A key challenge noted by Ntuli is the hesitance within local communities to report known perpetrators. In his appeal, he stressed the importance of community cooperation with law enforcement to help curb such violent incidents.

The country is among the highest in the world for murder rates, with official statistics noting approximately 75 murders daily, many involving firearms. Over the three-month period from October to December 2024, nearly 7,000 murders were recorded across the nation.

The shooting in Umlazi follows other recent violent incidents in South Africa. Notably, a September 2024 attack resulted in the death of seven family members, including three children, while another shooting in January 2025 saw eight people killed outside a tavern in Pienaar, Mpumalanga.
Adding to the string of violent activities, in April 2025, U.S. missionary Josh Sullivan was abducted during a church sermon and later rescued in a police operation that ended with three suspects dead.
