Tragedy on Grapevine Lake: Air Force Academy Graduate Killed in Jet Ski Collision, Two Arrested

GRAPEVINE, Texas — A recent U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, aged 18, lost her life in a fatal collision at Grapevine Lake after her kayak was struck by a jet ski. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, led to the arrest of a 21-year-old woman, who now faces manslaughter charges.

The victim, identified as Ava Moore, was kayaking in the lake when a jet ski, reported to be operated erratically by Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, collided with her. According to eyewitness accounts, Gonzalez was driving dangerously close to other watercraft before leaving the scene immediately after the accident.

Emergency teams responded promptly, retrieving Moore from the water and administering urgent care as she was rushed to the hospital. Despite their efforts, Moore was declared deceased before hospital arrival at around 5:59 p.m.

The collision reportedly happened as Moore and another kayaker were trying to move away from the erratic path of the jet ski near the lake’s edge.

In a distressing turn of events, Gonzalez was later observed fleeing the scene in a Toyota Corolla driven by Maikel Coello Perozo, who is accused of subsequently causing a multiple-vehicle collision.

Both Gonzalez and Perozo were arrested on Tuesday at their Dallas home by local law enforcement officers.

Further adding to the case, District Attorney Ken Paxton revealed that both Gonzalez and Perozo are Venezuelan nationals currently residing in the U.S. without legal permission. Gonzalez has been charged with second-degree manslaughter. Additional charges against Perozo include leaving the scene of an accident, and further legal actions might be considered as ongoing investigations reveal more details.

The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, gathering people together in mourning and remembrance of Moore, who is commemorated for her dedication and the promising future that was so abruptly taken from her.

Local authorities continue to delve into the specifics of the incident, examining the sequence of events that led to this tragedy, and assessing the behavioral patterns that precipitated the lethal mishap. They hope to uncover findings that may prevent such occurrences in the future.

As this case progresses, the legal implications may lead to a broader discussion on water safety and enforcement policies, potentially prompting a reassessment of regulations surrounding watercraft operation on busy lakes. The emphasis now is not only on justice for Ava Moore but also on understanding and mitigating the risks that led to such a devastating outcome.
