Tragedy on Texas Waters: Air Force Academy Hopeful’s Life Cut Short in Fatal Jet Ski Collision

Grapevine, TX — An 18-year-old student from the Air Force Academy Preparatory School tragically lost her life in a jet ski hit-and-run incident at Grapevine Lake on Sunday evening. Authorities have identified the victim as Ava Moore, who was kayaking near Oak Grove Park when struck by a speeding jet ski operated by two individuals.

Witnesses reported that Moore, alongside other kayakers, had been trying to move to a safer area of the water as the jet ski approached. The collision caused Moore grievous head injuries; she was immediately assisted to shore by nearby individuals who commenced life-saving efforts. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Moore was later pronounced dead.

The incident triggered a robust law enforcement response. While one occupant of the jet ski stayed on the scene to speak with first responders, reports indicate that the operator fled in a vehicle driven by an adult male. Their hurried departure resulted in them colliding with two other vehicles as they exited the lake vicinity.

Swift action by authorities, fueled by over 900 public tips, led to the arrest of 21-year-olds Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez and Maikel Coello Perozo on Tuesday. Found at a residence on Kildare Avenue in Dallas’s Oak Cliff neighborhood, both were preparing apparently to escape, evidenced by packed suitcases.

Gonzalez now faces a felony manslaughter charge, while Perozo is charged with misdemeanors for vehicle collision involvement and hindering apprehension. More charges could be forthcoming as investigations proceed.

Police affidavits reveal that immediate attempts by bystanders to prevent Gonzalez and Perozo from fleeing were thwarted by others in their group who assisted their escape to a nearby parking lot. Perozo admitted his role in helping Gonzalez evade arrest to avoid accountability for Moore’s death.

Notably, both suspects are Venezuelan nationals who had previously entered the U.S. illegally. Initial encounters with U.S. authorities resulted in them being processed and released pending their immigration hearings. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has since placed detainers on them.

Moore had recently celebrated her graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and was set to join the Air Force Academy’s class of 2029. Recalled as an exemplary leader, her loss is deeply felt, described by Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind as a significant blow to the community, given her spirited passion for service.

The community and Moore’s family, while devastated, expressed gratitude for the widespread support they have received. They hope that, even in death, Moore’s spirited life continues to inspire and influence the community positively.

The investigation into Moore’s death continues, led by Texas Game Wardens and involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Questions about the operation and legality of the jet ski and whether alcohol played a role in the incident remain central to ongoing inquiries. Meanwhile, the Grapevine Police Department is separately investigating the subsequent vehicle collisions caused during the suspects’ escape.

Authorities are determined to unravel every aspect of the case to deliver justice for Moore, reiterating the grave consequences of reckless watercraft operation in public areas. The tragedy highlights the broader implications of water safety and responsible behavior in recreational settings.
