Mother fatally collapses on way to daughter’s high school graduation

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – A family in Winston-Salem is grappling with an unimaginable loss after Jeanne Byrd, a beloved mother and community figure, tragically died while on her way to her daughter Marlene’s high school graduation. Jeanne’s sudden passing has left her family and the community in mourning, as they remember her vibrant spirit and dedication to those around her.

Jeanne was making her way through the parking lot to attend the graduation ceremony when she suddenly collapsed. Her son, Mark Juan Matthews, was inside the coliseum, awaiting the start of the ceremony when he received a distressing call from his aunt. Rushing to the scene on a security golf cart, Mark Juan arrived to find his mother unresponsive on the ground.

Desperate to save her, Mark Juan performed CPR until paramedics arrived. He describes the painful moment of witnessing his mother’s final breath, a memory that continues to haunt him. “It was a curse,” he said, reflecting on the heart-wrenching experience. “I watched my mom’s soul lift out of her, and it was very hard for me.”

Meanwhile, Marlene, unaware of the tragedy unfolding outside, received her diploma. A guidance counselor informed her that her mother had been in an accident and took her to the hospital. Marlene initially thought it was a car accident and did not realize the gravity of the situation.

The Byrd family is now focused on honoring Jeanne’s memory, a woman remembered for her infectious energy and kindness. Mark Juan described his mother as a safe haven for children and anyone who needed support. Her impact on the community was profound, and her absence is deeply felt.

Originally from Philadelphia, Jeanne’s family hopes to lay her to rest in her hometown. To help cover the costs, they have initiated a GoFundMe campaign, seeking support from those touched by Jeanne’s life and legacy.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Byrd family is taking life one day at a time, finding solace in the memories of Jeanne’s laughter and love. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and the many lives she touched.
