Tragic Hospital Incident Leads to Infant’s Death After Nurse’s Mistake in Ohio NICU

Columbus, Ohio – A tragic incident at Nationwide Children’s Hospital claimed the life of an infant girl who was close to discharge after spending the initial weeks of her life in neonatal intensive care. The child, identified as Ellieana Jewel Peyton, died following complications that arose after an accident involving a nurse and essential monitoring equipment.

Born with congenital dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart’s left side, Ellieana was under constant observation in the NICU at Nationwide Children’s Hospital since her birth on March 4, 2025. Her parents, Tyler Peyton and Mackenzie Marshall, residents of Zanesville, Ohio, had hopes of bringing their daughter home soon as she had been showing signs of improvement.

The incident occurred on March 26 when, during a brief period while her parents were not at the hospital, Ellieana was inadvertently dragged from her crib by a nurse whose pocket caught on to the infant’s monitor cords. The fall resulted in severe head injuries, including a fractured skull and brain bleeding.

Despite efforts to save her, Ellieana succumbed to her injuries five days later on March 31. An autopsy report by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office later determined the cause of death to be related to her heart condition, exacerbated by the trauma from the fall. The coroner ruled the death as accidental.

The hospital, citing patient privacy, has not disclosed details about the incident but affirmed that their NICU follows strict safety protocols which include hand hygiene and restrictions on personal items in patient care areas.

In response to their daughter’s death, Ellieana’s parents have had to navigate profound grief. Mackenzie Peyton expressed to the media the continual emotional turmoil they endure, fluctuating between good and bad days. To support the Peyton family during this difficult time, a family friend initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover medical expenses and loss of income, highlighting the community’s efforts to rally around the bereaved family.

Family members remember Ellieana for her infectious smile and lively brown eyes, traits that endeared her to all who came into her small world. According to her obituary, she responded well to her parents’ voices and preferred being held close by her loved ones.

Her funeral was held on April 5, 2025, in Zanesville, Ohio, with Pastor Nehemiah Gaiters presiding over the services at First Church of God. The proceedings concluded with cremation, arranged by DeLong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home.

As investigations concluded, the coroner’s office reaffirmed that the incident was accidental, thereby excluding negligence or intent. Meanwhile, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, known for its Level IV NICU that provides high-level care for critically ill newborns, reiterated its commitment to maintaining rigorous safety standards in the care of its most vulnerable patients.

Ellieana’s tragic accident and subsequent death have left a void in her family’s life, one filled with memories of brief moments of joy and an overwhelming sense of loss. The community continues to support the Peyton family, drawing attention to the need for continued adherence to safety protocols in medical settings to prevent such incidents in the future.
