DETROIT, MI – A Detroit mother is grappling with the loss of her young son following a heartbreaking car accident that has also led to her facing legal repercussions. The tragedy unfolded when Shaniqua Baskin, driving with malfunctioning brakes, was involved in a fatal crash on May 6, 2020, resulting in the death of her four-year-old son, Jo’Quavious.
In a recent court hearing, Baskin was sentenced to three years of probation, with the first six months to be served in Wayne County Jail. She had previously pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the accident.
The incident occurred when Baskin’s vehicle, which had defective brakes, crossed the median on I-75 and collided with another car. Her son, who was not properly restrained, was ejected from the vehicle and found deceased on the highway.
During the sentencing, Baskin expressed profound remorse, recalling the love and care she had for her son. She lamented the series of events that led to the tragedy, including the use of her tax refund to purchase the problematic vehicle.
Adding to her legal troubles, Baskin was driving without a valid license and failed a field sobriety test at the scene. Despite this, she later asserted that she was not under the influence, attributing her unsteady behavior to the shock of her son’s death.
While the results of her blood alcohol tests were not made public, her attorney spoke of the enduring pain she would carry. The loss of her son was described as an unimaginable burden that she would have to learn to live with.
This case serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of vehicle maintenance and child safety measures. The community stands in solidarity with Baskin as they mourn the loss of a young life taken too soon.
