ATWOOD LAKE, OH – A weekend retreat at Atwood Lake turned tragic when a 4-year-old boy was found dead, and his father was discovered drowned in the same waters. Authorities say the boy’s mother drove a golf cart into the lake with her three other children aboard in what is being investigated as a deliberate act.
The incident unfolded Saturday morning near Atwood Marina West. Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a woman intentionally steering a golf cart into the water with her teenage children. All three teens escaped unharmed.
Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell stated that the mother made concerning remarks about receiving divine instructions. She reportedly admitted to placing her 4-year-old son in the lake, claiming she was guided by a higher power.
The situation intensified when the woman’s husband was reported missing. Divers recovered the boy’s body Saturday evening, while the father’s body was found the following morning. Investigators suspect the father’s death was a suicide linked to similar beliefs.
The family, identified as members of the Holmes County Amish community, had been visiting the lake for the weekend. Authorities are examining the family’s mental health history and potential religious influences.
The mother is currently hospitalized for mental health evaluation and is expected to face criminal charges. Sheriff Campbell noted that search warrants are being executed to gather more evidence about the incident.
