SUWANEE, GA – An off-duty Gwinnett County deputy was shot and killed in a tragic incident late Friday night in Forsyth County. Authorities report that the deputy’s child was also injured in the shooting, which occurred in a townhome on Harland Way in Suwanee.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call shortly before 8 p.m. from a concerned neighbor. The call came after a teenager appeared at the neighbor’s door, reporting that a domestic argument had escalated into gunfire. According to the teen, their mother and her boyfriend were involved in the dispute when the boyfriend began shooting.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered the off-duty deputy deceased in an upstairs bedroom. The teenager, who had been shot multiple times, was transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition.
The suspect, identified as Eric Sumner, fled the scene but was apprehended by Monroe County deputies after a brief pursuit on I-75. Sumner faces charges of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with intent to murder.
The investigation is ongoing, with crime scene tape still surrounding the townhome. Forsyth County deputies and detectives continue to examine the details of the case, while a trauma services truck remains on-site to assist with the cleanup.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the slain deputy, pending notification of the family. The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted for further comment.
