Fatal Overdoses Associated With Potent Cocaine-Fentanyl Mixture Reported in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Harrisburg Bureau of Police in Pennsylvania is conducting an investigation following several overdoses, some of which were fatal, that occurred overnight in the city. Reportedly, the Dauphin County Drug & Alcohol Services has received reports of 18 overdoses within a span of 12 hours, with four of these incidents happening in a 20-minute period. Sadly, it was reported that four deaths had occurred as a result of these overdoses.

The overdoses took place in various parts of the city, including downtown, midtown, and uptown, all around the same time during the overnight hours. According to police, it appears that the overdoses are related to individuals who thought they were taking a cocaine-based substance but ended up consuming something containing an opioid-based narcotic.

Randie Yeager, the director of Dauphin County Human Services, has issued a warning to recreational drug users, indicating that the drugs they’re using may contain particularly potent fentanyl. Initial testing has revealed the presence of fentanyl in cocaine and other synthetic drugs.

Police Commissioner Thomas Carter confirmed that there have been four confirmed fatalities due to the overdoses. During a brief interview, Carter mentioned that three of the fatalities occurred at the same apartment complex within the 300 block of North 2nd Street. Some days later, it was reported that two more overdose deaths had occurred in different locations within the city.

Officials are advising individuals who use controlled substances or are associated with those who do to be on high alert given the increased risk of overdoses. Additionally, they are urging anyone who suspects an overdose to call 911 immediately. Symptoms of an opioid overdose include constricted pupils, breathing difficulties, and unresponsiveness to stimuli.

Law enforcement is actively searching for those responsible for delivering the substance that caused the overdoses. They are seeking cooperation from the community in identifying and locating the suspects involved. The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to prevent further tragedies from occurring as a result of these dangerous substances.
