Police: Turkey argument ends in shooting at High Point Food Lion

High Point police say two men fired at each other after a store argument; one was hospitalized.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A quarrel about a turkey inside a Food Lion on North Main Street spilled into the parking lot Thursday evening and turned into a shootout between two men, police said. One man was struck in the arm and taken to a hospital.

Police said the chain of events started around 6:05 p.m. when a customer argued with a store employee about a turkey. Another customer stepped in, and words turned to shoving. The men headed outside, where investigators say shots were exchanged. Officers responding to 911 calls found both men still at the store. Detectives interviewed one of them on scene while medical crews treated the injured man and transported him for further care. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities said the early timeline was pieced together from witness statements and store surveillance footage. Investigators did not immediately identify either man or say whether they would face charges. It was not clear who fired first. Police also did not say whether the guns were kept in vehicles or carried on the men when they entered the store. The store remained open after the scene was processed, and officers said there was no ongoing danger.

The Food Lion sits in a busy commercial stretch of North Main Street with steady evening traffic. Shoppers described hearing several loud cracks and seeing people duck behind cars. Employees placed caution tape around a section of the lot while detectives collected shell casings and photographed vehicles. A manager declined to comment in detail but said employees followed safety protocols and called 911 quickly as the argument moved toward the doors.

Police said the case remains active. Detectives plan to consult with prosecutors after reviewing video and comparing accounts from both men and independent witnesses. Any charging decisions, including potential assault or weapons offenses, could come after that review. Officials said an update will be provided when investigators can confirm key facts and complete preliminary interviews.

By late Thursday, officers had cleared the scene and normal traffic resumed on North Main Street. The wounded man’s condition was described as stable as of Friday morning, and no arrests had been announced.
