Suspected gunman dead, two women hurt in Dallas Walmart lot

Police say the women were hospitalized in stable condition after gunfire at a Forest Lane store.

DALLAS, Texas — A midafternoon shooting in the parking lot of a Walmart on Forest Lane left the suspected gunman dead and two adult women wounded on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Dallas police and Dallas Fire-Rescue responded within minutes and secured the scene near Interstate 635.

Authorities said the incident unfolded in the store’s front parking area shortly before 3:30 p.m., drawing multiple patrol units and rescue crews. The women were taken to area hospitals and described as stable. The man believed to be the shooter was later found dead inside a vehicle in the lot. The location, a busy retail corridor in Northeast Dallas, remained taped off for several hours as detectives canvassed for witnesses and collected shell casings and video. Investigators said early evidence pointed to a targeted encounter rather than random gunfire, and there was no ongoing threat to shoppers once officers arrived.

Dispatch records show emergency crews were sent around 3:23 p.m. to the Walmart at 9301 Forest Lane, near Abrams Road. Officers located two injured women and provided aid while Fire-Rescue units staged nearby. Command staff established a perimeter across several aisles of the lot, and a mobile crime scene van later arrived. Police said preliminary information indicated the women suffered non-life-threatening wounds. An off-duty officer at the store helped direct bystanders away from the area as medics moved the victims to ambulances. Detectives reviewed store cameras and spoke with employees who had sheltered customers inside as the scene unfolded.

Officials said the man believed to have fired the shots was found deceased inside a car in the parking lot, and early indications suggested a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have not released his name, pending next-of-kin notification, and did not immediately describe any relationship between him and the women. Homicide detectives took the lead because a death occurred at the scene, while aggravated assault investigators documented the victims’ injuries. Police did not report any officers firing their weapons. The department said the case remains open as they trace the firearm and examine ballistics to confirm the sequence of shots.

Forest Lane and the surrounding Lake Highlands area have seen heavy retail traffic and recurring property crime calls, but shootings in the grocery and big-box lots are less frequent, according to recent police call logs. The Walmart complex sits just south of I-635 and east of the Greenville Avenue corridor, with several large apartment communities and service businesses nearby. In recent years, Dallas police have emphasized rapid scene control at large retail centers after high-profile incidents statewide, adding visible patrols during peak shopping hours to reduce response times when disturbances escalate.

Investigators were expected to release an incident report once the victims’ statements were recorded and evidence was logged. Any charging decisions will depend on the final ruling of the Dallas County Medical Examiner, which will determine the manner of the suspected shooter’s death. Police said they would provide updates on the victims’ conditions and the man’s identity after notifications are complete. Detectives also plan to review license plate reader alerts, social media tips and store surveillance to map the paths of those involved before the gunfire. No additional suspects were being sought as of Thursday.

As dusk approached Wednesday, officers guided shoppers to their cars on the far side of the lot as crime-scene tape fluttered in a steady breeze. A few carts sat abandoned near the storefront. Employees described a quick rush to usher customers into safer areas while 9-1-1 calls poured in. One worker said colleagues “did what we train to do,” clearing entrances and locking vestibule doors as sirens approached. Customers waiting to pick up prescriptions watched from behind the glass as detectives placed numbered markers near the curb.

The investigation remains active; officials said the next update could come after the medical examiner’s identification and preliminary findings expected in the coming days.
