Affidavit: Child locked in room before fatal Oklahoma dog mauling

The girl, identified by police as 2-year-old Locklynn McGuire, died Nov. 18 in northeast Oklahoma City.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Two parents were arrested Friday on second-degree murder complaints after their daughter, 2-year-old Locklynn McGuire, was killed by a family dog late Tuesday inside a home near NE 26th Street and Martin Luther King Avenue, authorities said.

The case reached a turning point as detectives reviewed medical records and an arrest affidavit detailing earlier injuries and home conditions. Investigators in the Crimes Against Children unit say the toddler had been left in a bedroom with a dog for a “substantial” time before she was found dead. Prosecutors are reviewing the file for formal charges as the medical examiner conducts a full autopsy. City animal welfare officers removed four dogs from the home the night of the death.

Police were sent just before 11:40 p.m. Nov. 18 after a caller reported a baby not breathing. Officers found the child dead at the scene with multiple bite wounds. Staff Sgt. Dillon Quirk said detectives learned the bedroom door had a double-sided toddler lock that the child could not open. The affidavit states the dog had previously attacked the girl on Nov. 6, causing a partial ear amputation that required plastic surgery. Authorities say neither police nor animal welfare received a report of that earlier attack.

According to the filing, the dog at issue is a family pit bull that had been separated from three other dogs in the home because of aggression. Three of the animals appeared malnourished when animal welfare took custody, investigators wrote. Police said several people were inside the house Tuesday night and cooperated with officers. Detectives have not said precisely how long the child was alone in the bedroom before she was discovered.

The parents were booked into the Oklahoma County jail on Friday. Records identify them as Jordan McGuire, 34, and Darci Lambert, 24. Under Oklahoma law, second-degree murder can be filed when conduct shows a depraved mind in circumstances dangerous to human life. The district attorney will decide whether to file that charge or a different count after reviewing reports from detectives and the medical examiner.

The Department of Human Services said it was notified after the Nov. 6 injury and opened an investigation then, but the agency said state statute limits what can be released until the criminal case led by police concludes or charges are filed. Neighbors said they saw animal control vehicles on the block that night and later a small memorial of stuffed animals near the front entry. Family members posted an online fundraiser describing the child, who would have turned 3 in December, as loving and bright.

As of Sunday, the dogs remain in city custody while evidence is processed. Prosecutors could announce charging decisions and a first appearance date this week. Police say further updates will come after additional interviews and the medical examiner’s report.
