Tragic End in North Carolina: Foster Teen Suspected in Double Homicide Before Own Death

Raeford, NC – A tragic series of events unfolded in a quiet North Carolina community where a couple was found murdered in their home, followed by the suicide of their teenage foster child, a sheriff’s office reported.

On Monday, Hoke County officials were summoned to the home of Joann Chavis, 46, and Ted Chavis, 53, under the pretenses of a cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the couple had been fatally stabbed and began a homicide investigation.

The investigation quickly centered on the couple’s 17-year-old foster son, identified only as D.P., as the primary suspect. Law enforcement officials traced the teenager nearly 80 miles southeast to Lake Waccamaw, where a subsequent and grim discovery was made. D.P. had died by suicide, confirmed by gunshot, found near the Boys & Girls Homes facility, where he had parked his vehicle.

While the motivations for the murders and the teenager’s subsequent movement to Lake Waccamaw remain undisclosed, the connection between D.P. and the Boys & Girls Homes, an organization not listed as having the Chavis couple as registered foster parents, is also yet unclear. The facility has opted not to comment on the involvement of any juveniles in its programs regarding this case.

As state and local law enforcement continue their collaborative investigation beyond county borders, the focus remains on piecing together the sequence of events that led to these tragic deaths. The underlying motives behind the murders and the suicide are still being determined, casting a somber tone over the community seeking answers.

The Chavises are remembered by their neighbors in Raeford as integral members of a close-knit community, their violent deaths leaving a void filled with sorrow and disbelief among friends and family.

Hoke County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the State Bureau of Investigation, is meticulously reviewing all evidences in this active and ongoing investigation. To date, there have been no reports of preceding complaints or issues involving the family or D.P.

Community members continue to grapple with the shock of this tragedy as they mourn the loss of the Chavis couple and reflect on the complexities surrounding their foster son’s involvement and subsequent death.

The case resonates beyond the immediate tragedy, highlighting deeper issues related to foster care dynamics and mental health considerations in adolescence. Meanwhile, law enforcement is committed to transparency and thoroughness in their ongoing investigation, ensuring that all facts are meticulously examined to bring clarity to this perplexing case.
