MUSKEGO, WI — A tragic incident unfolded Sunday night west of Milwaukee when a car crash resulted in the death of a 77-year-old woman, left in a ditch by her son, who fled the scene. The 47-year-old Milwaukee-area man, Casey Yiannackopoulos, has now been charged with first-degree reckless homicide, among other offenses.
Authorities rushed to a report of a vehicle overturned in a ditch on Hillendale Drive in Muskego shortly after 7 p.m., where they found the elderly victim unconscious in the front passenger seat. Despite rapid rescue efforts to extract her and provide medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital within the hour.
Eyewitnesses describe seeing Yiannackopoulos exit the vehicle and stagger away, allegedly under the influence and reeking of alcohol. Neighbors reported that he seemed unsteady and mentioned going for help but never returned. Enhanced by security footage, these accounts showed the car speeding at 20 miles per hour over the limit before the accident.
Yiannackopoulos was later found hiding in the attic of a nearby residence, believed to be his mother’s house. A confrontational standoff ensued as he barricaded himself and resisted arrest, hurling insults at the officers. Technology played a role in his capture; police used a drone to track and physically retrieve him from under makeshift covers.
At his arrest, Yiannackopoulos appeared visibly intoxicated, which was evident from his bloodshot and glassy eyes, though he insisted that the crash was unintentional. He expressed regret, claiming ignorance about the severity of his mother’s condition at the time of the accident. Results from a blood test are forthcoming.
During his initial court appearance, local authorities and the court commissioner, Daniel Rieck, voiced significant dismay at Yiannackopoulos’s actions, particularly his failure to assist his injured mother post-crash. The gravity of the situation has led to a hefty $750,000 bond, with his next court date set for Thursday.
As investigations continue, the police remain tight-lipped about further details leading up to the crash. This tragic event has shaken the Muskego community, highlighting the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the moral duty of individuals to aid those in peril — especially when it involves a family member.
