Man killed after dinner with friends; suspect later surrenders

Police say a single gunshot outside a Smyrna home ended an argument that began after a late-night gathering.

SMYRNA, Ga. — A 48-year-old man was shot and killed early Sun., Nov. 30, outside his home in the Vinings Brooke subdivision after a dinner with friends, and the man accused in the shooting turned himself in on Wed., Dec. 3, Smyrna police said.

Investigators identified the victim as Tori Harris and the suspect as 50-year-old Nikia Williams. Detectives say the group went out to dinner Saturday, returned to Harris’ home and stayed into the early morning hours. An argument inside the house escalated when Harris reportedly asked Williams to leave. Police say a struggle followed, a gun appeared, and one shot was fired outside near the walkway to the front door. Williams fled before officers arrived, according to police, and later surrendered at the Cobb County Jail. He is charged with murder and aggravated assault as the investigation continues.

Officers were called just after midnight Sunday and found Harris on the pavement by the path leading to his front door, according to police. “The suspect, Mr. Williams, didn’t want to leave the house and there was a verbal altercation and a physical altercation and … all of a sudden there was a gun,” Lt. Meredith Holt said. Witnesses told investigators they heard a single gunshot. Detectives say the gathering involved about a half-dozen friends who had spent the evening together and returned to the home to continue talking after dinner. Police have not said who owned the gun or where it was kept before it appeared during the struggle.

Authorities say Williams left before officers arrived and remained at large for several days as detectives interviewed witnesses and canvassed the neighborhood. On Wednesday morning, police say Williams surrendered at the Cobb County Jail without incident. He was booked on counts of murder and aggravated assault. Investigators have not disclosed a motive or described the relationship between Williams and Harris. Neighbors told local reporters Harris was well liked and often greeted people while out walking with his partner. Detectives are reviewing statements from those who attended the dinner and are checking whether any exterior cameras captured parts of the encounter near the walkway.

Police placed the timeline between late Saturday night and the early minutes of Sunday, aligning with the Thanksgiving weekend when many residents were hosting friends. Records show the shooting happened in the Vinings Brooke subdivision, a residential area in Smyrna near the Cobb–Fulton line, where similar violent incidents are rare. Officers cordoned off the front yard and walkway for hours while crime-scene technicians documented evidence. The department has not said whether they recovered the firearm or how many casings were found beyond the single round witnesses reported hearing. Officials also have not released who else remained at the house when the shot was fired, citing the ongoing investigation.

With Williams in custody, police said they will present the case to the Cobb County District Attorney after completing interviews and receiving ballistic and forensic reports. Any first-appearance hearing would occur in Cobb County, and a preliminary hearing could follow if prosecutors move forward with the murder charge. Police did not announce additional arrests or charges tied to the gathering. A celebration of life for Harris is planned for Saturday, Dec. 6, according to those close to the family. Further updates are expected after detectives finish processing physical evidence and finalize the timeline of events inside the home.

As residents placed flowers near the front steps, one neighbor described Harris as “an all-around wonderful guy” who waved to passersby and kept his yard tidy. Another resident said the flashing patrol lights before dawn jolted the quiet block awake. “We saw officers around the walkway and knew something terrible had happened,” she said. Police asked anyone who was at dinner or stopped by the house afterward to share details with detectives to help fill in the minute-by-minute sequence that led to the single fatal shot.

As of Saturday morning, Williams remained in the Cobb County Jail on murder and aggravated assault charges. Police said more information could be released after forensic testing is complete and the case is forwarded to prosecutors next week.
