FISHERS, IN – Following a months-long investigation marred by conflicting testimonies and complex legal proceedings, Hamilton County prosecutors have filed charges against a 26-year-old man in a case involving a fatal shooting during a house party in March.
The incident, which resulted in the death of 24-year-old Cameron Doaks, occurred at a Fishers rental property, located northeast of Indianapolis. The local police were summoned to the Airbnb on Apple Blossom Road shortly before midnight on March 16, where they discovered Doaks with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention, Doaks was declared dead at a nearby hospital within the hour.
Investigators at the scene recovered a firearm under Doaks’s body and noted multiple shell casings around the vicinity. Additionally, a stray bullet had damaged a neighbor’s light fixture, underscoring the chaotic nature of the event. The probe revealed that firearms from two individuals were discharged during the confrontation.
Among those questioned was Caleb Weis, who appeared visibly shaken and incredulous over the unfolding events. Initial investigations did not yield enough evidence to charge him immediately with murder.
Subsequent interviews between March and May revealed Weis’s shifting recount of that night. Initially, he claimed he acted in self-defense when confronted by Doaks and another man, both allegedly armed. Weis asserted that he had fired his gun after being threatened.
However, Weis later detailed a grim scene where, upon seeing Doaks wounded, he fired additional shots fearing further threat and, purportedly, to end Doaks’s suffering. This latter statement, where Weis likened his actions to euthanizing a wounded animal, was particularly damning as prosecutors argued it demonstrated intent rather than self-defense.
This turn of events arose from a misunderstanding as Weis was leaving the party to fetch more alcohol. Doaks mistakenly thought Weis was trying to steal his vehicle, leading to the fatal altercation. Weis also mentioned his concerns about being robbed due to his visible wealth on social media, noting his unfamiliarity with many party attendees which heightened his suspicions.
As of November 5, Weis faces several charges, including murder, attempted murder, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery, and criminal recklessness with a dangerous weapon.
In a dramatic twist, the attempt to serve Weis with an arrest warrant resulted in an officer-involved shooting, leaving him critically injured and hospitalized.
