Milwaukee Woman Receives Life Sentence for the Fatal Abuse of Six-Year-Old Boy Under Her Care

MILWAUKEE, WI – In a heartbreaking case that has shaken the local community, a Milwaukee woman was sentenced to life imprisonment for the fatal beating of her boyfriend’s 6-year-old son. The sentencing occurred on Tuesday, concluding a distressing chapter in a tragic child abuse story.

Anitra Burks, 34, faced the final judgment for the death of the young boy, Zane McAttee-Adams, in July of last year. The child’s death, under circumstances marked by neglect and physical abuse, was adjudicated by the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, which found Burks guilty of first-degree reckless homicide and additional charges.

The case unfolded on July 21, 2024, when Zane was urgently taken to Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital. He presented with severe, extensive bruising and was hardly conscious, necessitating an immediate transfer to Children’s Wisconsin Hospital for advanced care. There, further examinations revealed devastating injuries including a lacerated small intestine and a fractured pelvis.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, Zane passed away the following day due to blunt force trauma, as concluded by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner. The severity and nature of the injuries led medical professionals to rule out accidental causes, typically rare in such young children.

During the investigation, details emerged about Burks’ role as the primary caretaker at the time of Zane’s injuries, with his father, Devon Adams, incarcerated on unrelated charges. The narrative initially provided by Burks attributed the boy’s condition to an illness, complicating the case. However, inconsistencies in her story prompted a deeper probe which led to charges indicative of a pattern of abusive behavior.

Presiding Judge Laura Crivello labeled the offense as particularly heinous. She noted, during sentencing, that the gravity of the crime was compounded by Burks’ previous criminal record involving child abuse. In 2013, Burks was convicted for causing severe burns to a 14-month-old child, an incident that resulted in a significant prison sentence followed by supervised release, which had concluded shortly before Zane’s tragic death.

The backdrop of repeat offenses played a critical role in the court’s decision to impose a life sentence without parole, emphasizing a stern stance against repeated violent behavior towards children.

The community response has been one of sorrow and outrage, with local child welfare advocates calling for increased vigilance and preventive measures against child abuse. The case has also sparked discussions on the responsibilities and challenges faced by single caregivers in the community, highlighting the need for better support systems to prevent such tragedies.

Devon Adams, Zane’s father who was absent due to his own legal troubles, is currently serving a sentence from a 2022 conviction, leaving the family’s story marked by incarceration and loss.

This sentence aims to deliver justice for Zane while signaling a zero-tolerance policy towards child abuse in Wisconsin, a stance hoped to deter future atrocities against the most vulnerable. As Burks begins her life sentence, the case remains a somber reminder of the critical need for protective interventions in the lives of at-risk children.
