Phoenix Man Charged with Murder After Delivering Girlfriend’s Body to Police Station Following Fatal Argument

PHOENIX, AZ – A tragic scene unfolded early this week in Phoenix when a man turned himself in at a local police precinct, carrying the lifeless body of his girlfriend in his truck, sparking a homicide investigation that has rocked the community. Authorities arrested 36-year-old Josue Barreras Anaya and charged him with first-degree murder following the death of 32-year-old Jessica Guzman.

According to the police, the incident occurred at Anaya’s residence during a heated argument, reportedly triggered when a firearm unexpectedly discharged. The struggle ensued after the firearm, which Anaya claimed to have been storing under his pillow, fell and went off. During the altercation that followed, Guzman was fatally shot in the head.

After the shooting, Anaya did not immediately contact law enforcement. Instead, he is said to have wrapped Guzman’s body in a comforter, placed her in the bed of his GMC Sierra, and drove to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct. He arrived around 5 a.m. Tuesday, where he approached officers in the parking lot and revealed the grim cargo he was carrying.

At the station, police tested Anaya for gunshot residue and conducted initial questioning. He eventually requested an attorney and was taken into custody. Anaya is currently held on a $1 million bond.

The loss of Guzman has left her family and friends in profound grief. Her brother conveyed their longstanding worries about her safety, citing previous incidents of alleged abuse and isolation by Anaya. This incident adds another heartbreaking chapter to the narrative that Guzman once shared with family members about feeling unsafe.

In memory of Guzman, who is survived by a young son, her family has initiated a fundraising campaign. Described as a devoted mother, daughter, and sister, Guzman was seen as a foundational pillar of her family. The campaign aims to provide for her son and help the family manage through their overwhelming sorrow.

As investigations proceed, police have withheld details on the firearm and any prior disturbances reported at the home. However, this event has reignited conversations about domestic violence in the area. Local advocates have seized this moment to emphasize the necessity for effective safety planning and robust support systems for individuals experiencing domestic abuse.

Currently, as Anaya faces legal proceedings, the community and Guzman’s family are left to contend with the implications of this violent act and the ongoing conversation about the protection and support for those affected by domestic violence. The case serves as a somber reminder of the critical need for awareness and action in combating domestic abuse.
