Colorado Trio Accused in Desert Murder Plot: Deadly Attack on Uncle Unravels Amid Family Tensions

FRUITA, Colo. — In the barren expanses outside Fruita, Colorado, the discovery of a 62-year-old man’s body has led to the arrest of three local residents on charges including first-degree murder and conspiracy. The deceased, identified as John Krabbe, was found in the remote 21 Road area of the desert this past weekend. The suspects, according to authorities, include Krabbe’s niece Sarah Bess, her fiancé Weston Owen, both 18, and their acquaintance, 21-year-old Kellar Weisgerber.

Investigations revealed that the murder unfolded after a series of events starting at a local bar where Krabbe, Bess, who was the designated driver, and Owen spent the evening. It was here that Owen purportedly observed interactions between Krabbe and Bess, which he found inappropriate, sparking suspicion and setting the stage for the tragic events that followed.

Owen, allegedly feeling protective, reached out to Weisgerber for help confronting Krabbe about the perceived misbehavior. That night, at Krabbe’s home, the three suspects reportedly crafted a deadly plan, which culminated in a violent attack while the victim slept.

According to court documents, Owen and Weisgerber carried out a brutal assault; Owen used a flashlight as a weapon while Weisgerber restrained Krabbe. The documentation states that Bess listened from another room and only entered after hearing a fatal skull fracture, at which point Owen strangled Krabbe. She then allegedly verified her uncle’s death by checking for a pulse.

Following the murder, the trio bound Krabbe’s limbs with red rope, moved his body to his own Jeep, and transported him to the desert location where they abandoned him behind a bush. An attempt was made to cover their tracks by destroying evidence. They collected items soiled with the victim’s blood, took them to the desert, and set them ablaze.

In a twist, it was Bess who distanced herself from the scene to call her mother, reportedly after Owen threatened her with a knife to keep her silent. Her call to her mother prompted the latter to alert the authorities, which led them to the desert disposal site and, subsequently, to the arrests of all three suspected offenders.

A local judge has set the bond at $2 million for each of the accused as the community reels from the shock of such a heinous crime. As the legal proceedings advance, the suspects’ next court date is set for December 5, when further evidence and details of this intricate case will be presented. The small community of Fruita, largely unaccustomed to such violent occurrences, remains in mourning and disbelief as it grapples with the implications of this grave incident.
